Gold selling guide

How to sell gold safely and transparently

Know what to expect from testing, weighing and valuation before you make a decision.

A careful six-step process

Step 1

Estimate your gold’s approximate value before visiting.

Step 2

Carry the jewellery and a valid identity document.

Step 3

Ask how purity is being tested and watch the process.

Step 4

Confirm stones, Meena and other non-gold material are accounted for.

Step 5

Review the final weight, purity and offered value before deciding.

Step 6

Choose a traceable payment method and keep the receipt.

Make an informed choice

Gold rates can change during the day, and a physical assessment is necessary. Never feel pressured to proceed before you understand the final valuation.

Compare offers on the same basis

Ask each buyer to state the tested purity, gross weight, non-gold weight and net gold weight in grams. Check which reference date and rate apply, and request an explanation of any charges or deductions before accepting. A high headline rate is not enough to compare two offers if their weight or purity assumptions differ.

Keep control of the decision

Ask whether a test is destructive and obtain a clear explanation before consenting. Understand when jewellery would be melted or otherwise altered; do not assume the item can be returned unchanged after such a process. Confirm the payment recipient, amount and timing, and keep a written receipt identifying the transaction.

Read the purity and hallmark guide, compare the latest available reference rate, or contact a branch for an item-specific assessment. None of these references guarantees a purchase price.
